Sustainability in cigars

Die Tabak Zeitung // The Oliva Cigar Company has announced that its cigar boxes are made entirely from FSC-certified wood. This makes Oliva Cigar Co. the first cigar company to achieve FSC chain of custody certification. This milestone underscores Oliva’s long-term commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship and social responsibility in all areas.
“This certification is not just about materials – it’s about a philosophy,” says Cory Bappert, CEO of Oliva Cigar. “It ensures that all the wood used in our boxes comes from responsible sources that support reforestation, biodiversity, worker safety and fair labor standards.”
The FSC Chain of Custody certification confirms that every stage of Oliva’s crate production – from sourcing to finishing – follows strict sustainability protocols. This achievement is the culmination of a four-year project to develop new manuals, train employees in all departments and increase staff to ensure consistent compliance. While certification is an important step forward, Oliva Cigar Co. emphasizes that sustainability is an ongoing daily commitment. Every shipment of certified material must be inspected to ensure that no non-certified wood enters the production process.
