STUDY: Nicotine pouches work quickly and efficiently

The latest study data on the “Velo” brand from British American Tobacco (BAT) provides information on how quickly the nicotine is absorbed and how low the exposure to additives actually is – and thus opens up new perspectives on smoke-free alternatives.


The study shows that the nicotine pouches release the substance quickly and reliably within the first ten minutes of use. The results, which were published in the “Journal of Clinical Pharmacology”, are based on a study conducted in Sweden. According to BAT, adults who regularly consume snus or nicotine pouches were given products in two different strengths (11 milligrams and 20 milligrams) to test the absorption of the substance and the release of flavorings and sweeteners.


The researchers found that the highest nicotine concentration in the blood was reached after just ten minutes – a value comparable to that of cigarette smoking. According to the manufacturer, only 1.8 percent of the nicotine from the 20-milligram pouch could be detected in the saliva; most of it entered the body via the oral mucosa.


The majority of participants rated the nicotine pouches positively and stated that they would use the product again. According to the study, the intake of flavorings and sweeteners was also low.

Chris Junker, Head of Life Sciences at BAT, said: “Our study and further research shows that nicotine pouches can deliver the substance efficiently and quickly – similar to cigarette smoking, but with less harmful substances”.
