Imperial Brands plans to stop production in Langenhagen

13. November 2025

Die Tabak Zeitung // Cigarettes, fine-cut tobacco and tobacco sticks have been manufactured at the Reemtsma plant in Langenhagen for over fifty years – now the production facility of the Imperial Brands subsidiary, which opened in 1971, is facing an uncertain future. The announced possibility of a production stop marks the beginning of a new, decisive phase for the workforce, while the Group carefully weighs up the next steps.

The parent company Imperial Brands intends to discontinue production at the Langenhagen site, which is operated by its subsidiary Reemtsma. The management recently informed the employees of the plans and announced that it would now examine options such as a sale or closure together with the responsible parties, according to the Group.

According to the company, the planned measure is the result of a global review of the production network and part of the corporate strategy for the years 2026 to 2030. The decisive factors are declining production volumes in the traditional tobacco segment and falling capacity utilization.

RĂ©mi Guillon, Head of Logistics for the European market (Director Supply Chain Europe) and member of the Reemtsma Executive Board, explains: “Our intention to cease production in Langenhagen is a very regrettable but necessary decision to ensure that we can continue to invest in the long-term efficiency and effectiveness of our entire manufacturing network.” The consultation phase with the works council is to begin immediately.
