And indeed, the team of new Managing Director Dennis Sesar had a product in its luggage that has the potential to get the stagnant German market moving again: Six years after the King and Corset cigarette brands, Hauser is taking off again with Esse. Hauser wants to position the superslim cigarette as a competitor to brands such as Vogue and R1. Ambitious plans, but not unrealistic, as the super-slim cigarette segment is growing.
Moreover, Esse is not a no-name product, but has long been known to many travelers and holidaymakers. The brand was launched on the Korean market by tobacco company KT & G back in 1996 and has been exported to over 90 countries since 2004. For distribution in the German market, the Koreans, who have a market share of 66.7 percent for classic cigarettes in their home country, have sought out two partners: the Bulgarian conglomerate KTI, which has already gained experience with King and Corset on the German market and can look back on over 150 years of tobacco tradition, and of course the Augsburg-based Hermann Hauser GmbH, which knows the German specialist trade like few other companies.
And at Hauser, the sales team led by Sales Manager Carsten Banse is delighted with the sales that Esse could bring. After all, KT & G emphasizes that they sell 74 packs of Esse per second worldwide, and the Asians sell 67 billion cigarettes per year. Industry newcomer Sesar is also satisfied: “We are extremely lucky because we were able to choose the brand that we are now launching on the German market and that we believe in.” Incidentally, Hauser also believed in the King and Corset brands – and can now proudly report considerable sales growth.
